“Carbon offsetting – and how every purchase of Canon medical equipment benefits some of the poorest parts of the world”

Projects supported:

  • Kenyan Improved Stove Project
  • Ugandan Borehole Project

Canon Medical Systems is working with CO2balance UK to offset the carbon footprint of their medical products to make them ‘carbon zero’. CO2balance run “Gold Standard” projects which are monitored by the United Nations and as such are the most respected carbon offsetting projects available, providing real, measurable environmental and health advantages.

What are gold standard projects?

The projects that are supported by Canon Medical Systems Ltd are externally accredited through an independent organization called The Gold Standard. This external verification sets down a series of milestones which the projects must adhere to in order to be compliant with the project methodology; including regular monitoring, reporting and an annual site visit. Site visits are carried out by independent auditors accredited by the United Nations to validate carbon offset projects.

The Gold Standard is an internationally respected organization that assesses the social and community benefits to the region in addition to carbon saving. The Gold Standard Foundation is a Swiss based, non-profit organization providing certification of premium quality carbon credits in both the voluntary and compliance markets. The thorough and extensive methodology and approval process of the Gold Standard is designed to certify only the highest quality projects. Those projects must be either ‘energy efficient or ‘renewable energy’ related or both. All Gold Standard certified projects demonstrate real and permanent Greenhouse Gas emission reductions as well as sustainable development for the local communities which are measured, reported and verified.

The Gold Standard quality benchmark is derived from the actions of the Kyoto Protocol and its methodology is currently endorsed by over 80 non-governmental environmental and development organizations worldwide.
