Canon Medical Systems UK sponsor the Sheffield Hatters basketball team

As part of our goal to contribute to the prosperity of the world and improve life for all, Canon Medical is proud to sponsor a community-focused CSR initiative focused on sports health and wellbeing in partnership with the Sheffield Hatters, GB’s first women’s basketball club.

Canon will help the club continue their work as role models in the community through supporting local schools with coaching, running inter-school competitions and providing teams for local young women.

Our sporting community has a strong role-model ethos at its core, which has helped thousands of young girls and women over the years, giving them belonging, confidence and purpose. The Hatters Family is a supportive network for its players and volunteers, it teaches crucial life skills which helps them to take positive paths in life, encouraging life cycles, avoids anti-social behaviour plus encouraging them to embrace the feel-good factor that basketball can bring.”

The Sheffield Hatters are GB’s most successful basketball team

The Sheffield Hatters basketball club has been a pioneer in women’s sport since it was established in 1961 by Betty Codona OBE. The semi-professional female basketball team supports women aged from 6 to 60+ from their diverse local community to be physically active. With over 60 national trophies at elite level, the Hatters are GB’s most successful basketball team.

In 2022, the team rank third in the women’s British Basketball League and is run by volunteers.

The Sheffield Hatters are now based at the new Canon Medical Arena, a carbon neutral built arena with three full-size basketball courts, and designed to hold up to 2500 spectators.

The club empowers young women from their diverse local community

The Sheffield Hatters are on a mission to empower young women from their diverse local community, and give them the opportunity to have the same experiences that their current strong female role models provide.

The club’s senior players and coaches are involved with the local community and regularly visit Sheffield primary and secondary schools. Their strong junior development programme has been incredibly successful, with many young players moving into the senior team and going on to gain international honours.

Diversity and inclusion is important to Canon Medical Systems UK and we are delighted to support their cause.
